Shaken

There was a 3.9 earthquake this afternoon in the mountain resort town of Big Bear Lake. My son, Neal, was born in Big Bear 34 years ago today. That was the day after Mt St Helens exploded, and Neal has been crazy about the earth sciences since he was old enough to pick up a rock. My cousin the geologist visited when Neal was in the first grade, and Neal was so excited, you might have thought he had met a super hero. So, even though it is irrational, I am choosing to take comfort in this little shake up. It’s an earthquake on Neal’s birthday, with an epicenter at Neal’s place of birth, as though he were saying, “Here I am!” Or maybe, “What the heck! You sold the cabin?”
